Saman Farhangdoust was a successful student in his native Iran, having completed his master's degree program at Iran University of Science & Technology while also registering four patents. Yet Saman knew that in order to communicate his ideas to a broader audience and pursue his PhD in the United States, he would need to master yet another skill: the English language. While researching how to best improve his academic English skills, he learned that the quickest way to get from where he was to where he wanted to be was to take the TOEFL® test.
"I love researching, innovating and teaching internationally at high academic levels, which required learning the English language and taking the TOEFL test," he said. With his plan in place, he scored a 48 on his first test. Knowing he could retake the test as many times as he needed until he achieved the score he needed, he did not become discouraged. Instead, he got to work, ordering official TOEFL test prep from ETS, the makers of the test. He found that The Official Guide to the TOEFL® Test was an incredibly helpful resource.
"When studying for the TOEFL test, you are improving integrated and independent language skills. Note-taking during listening, summarizing during speaking, scanning through written texts, and skim reading are the skills the TOEFL test teaches you," Saman says.
In addition to his exceptional study habits, Saman supplemented his learning by watching television, reading books and magazines, and utilizing social media. Perhaps most importantly, Saman struck up conversations with English speakers whenever he had the opportunity. He thinks that may be the best practice of all. It's actually #1 on our three tips to enhance your English.
Through hard work and persistence, Saman increased his TOEFL test score to 101 and is currently a PhD student at Florida International University. He credits the TOEFL test with providing him with the skills he needed for success. "TOEFL absolutely exerts a beneficial influence on your communication skills in your business, in your career, in your study, and even in your daily life."
