Studying abroad is an amazing opportunity to experience another culture firsthand. You won’t just read a book about French cuisine, you’ll be able to taste it. You won’t just see pictures of the Pacific Ocean, you’ll have the chance to swim in it. It’s a time that you will most likely cherish forever but unfortunately, it can go fast. Not to worry though – here are a few ways to make your study abroad experience last forever.
- Keep in touch. Text messaging. Email. Instagram. Facebook. Sina Weibo. Renren. Luckily, today’s technology makes staying in touch easier than ever. Be sure to get the contact information of your classmates, friends and teachers so that you can share memories from your time abroad and future experiences. By expanding your social circle around the world, you may also grow your post-graduation job opportunities.
- Make a scrapbook. Gather pictures, ticket stubs, maps, stamps, and journal entries from your study abroad experience to make a scrapbook. It’s a fun and creative way to tell your story and keep all of your mementos in one safe place. If most of your keepsakes are digital, consider making a slideshow.
- Pay it forward. Now that you know what it’s like to go to school in a foreign country, you can use that valuable experience to help others. Get a job at your local study abroad office. Offer to mentor international students on your campus. Participate in an online community offering advice to students already studying abroad.
