Sometimes, simply doing what you enjoy can help you achieve your goals. Just ask Park Seul-gi, a recent TOEFL® scholarship winner from Korea. Her passion is reading, so she decided to make this work to her advantage by learning English. First, she started reading short stories in English. From there, she was able to move on to more advanced novels. It proved to be an effective method:
“Reading not only helped me develop my comprehension skills, but also aided the improvement of my writing and speaking.”
Park also read magazine articles, sometimes writing essays in English about what she had read. This helped her develop her writing and speaking skills.
Park is now majoring in English literature and teaching TOEFL® writing classes as a part-time job. She is grateful that the TOEFL® scholarship helped her to realize her dreams:
“I applied for the scholarship to be able to test myself ― I wanted to know how well I was doing. I was truly happy to know that I got the scholarship. I am grateful and will continue to do my best.”
