The Many Faces of TOEFL® Success Stories: Hannah Schuerholz

Apr 17, 2015

Growing up in Münster, Germany, Hannah Schuerholz dreamed of leaving her small town for a bigger city with the resources necessary to pursue her dreams in academia. Fast forward to today—Schuerholz lives in Melbourne, Australia and is an Associate Lecturer with a PhD. Schuerholz thanks the TOEFL® test for opening the initial door for her to go overseas and believes that it’s “connected to all the good things that have happened to her since.”

We asked Hannah for her advice to the next generation of TOEFL® test takers and here’s what she had to say:

“If you prepare well beforehand and know that the process takes time, you can actually enjoy it. Don’t pressure yourself either; really try to approach it in a relaxed manner.”

She also offered suggestions for students to keep in mind during their study abroad experience:

On starting out…

“Every journey is an individual journey. It is always good to get advice about when you move to a city, where to go, etc. When you start a degree—start creating links, which will really help you when you are there, you have to make your own journey and embark on the adventure.”

On adjusting to a new culture…

“Culture clash—it may seem tough—but the important thing is to always ask people for help.”

We hope Hannah’s advice helps you prepare for test day and wherever you choose to take your studies in life! Best of luck!
