Follow in Their Footsteps Success Stories: Jelita ‘Acha’ Septriasa

Sep 21, 2015

Jelita ‘Acha’ Septriasa has come a long way since taking the TOEFL® test and studying overseas. In addition to being an award-winning actress in Indonesia, she’s also a director, singer and composer. We were grateful to catch up with Jelita and get her thoughts on her career, studying abroad and how learning English changed her life:

What do you love most about your career?
“Trying new things and meeting new people.”

What is your biggest accomplishment?
“Winning Best Actress in the Second Corinthian Film Festival in Athens in 2011, and the ‘Festival Film Indonesia Best Actress’ award in 2012.”

Who is the person you look up to most?
“My grandmother is my role model. She encouraged me to be the person I am today.”

Why did you choose to learn English?
“Right now, I’m learning English because I have to speak the language in front of the cameras all the time.  I have to represent myself as an international actress and, at times, when I receive an award or during a press conference, I need to speak English.”

How did the TOEFL® test help you achieve your goals?
“The TOEFL® test is one of the most important things you need when applying to universities. After successfully completing it, I felt more confident speaking with friends abroad and I am more capable of writing essays.”

What is your advice to current students?
“English is something that requires a lot of practice rather than just learning from paper or theory. Watch a lot of movies, and listen to the music you love. Also, have conversations in English so you can see someone else’s point of view. You can always learn from your everyday life.”
